DFL Senate Tells Large Employers to Leave Minnesota

ST PAUL—The DFL Senate today passed a tax bill that tells large Minnesota employers that they are no longer welcome in the state.

That’s the effect, anyway, of the tax bill crafted by State Senator Larry Pogemiller and passed by a vote of 37-30 this afternoon.

The bill pays for increased local government aid by increasing taxes on businesses with subsidiaries outside the United States. The tax increase will cost corporations $160 million the first year, and about $120 million yearly after that. Large manufacturing and financial service corporations would be hurt the most.

“Minnesota doesn’t need to make its business climate any worse, and this bill certainly does that,” said David Strom, President of the Taxpayers League of Minnesota.

“Larry Pogemiller has been like a broken record, constantly going back to raise taxes on these Minnesota businesses. Unfortunately, if he got his way he would drive some of the most successful Minnesota companies out of the state.

“A good quality of life means good jobs at good wages. In the DFL Senate’s world, successful companies that can generate those good jobs are walking around with a target on their back. This is a job killing tax increase, and the Republicans in the Senate were right to vote against it,” Strom said.
