Are you paying enough in taxes?

During the State Fair, the Taxpayers League is passing out a quiz on the reality of Minnesota's taxes. Click the link above to take the quiz and to print off copies for your friends and neighbors.

Did you know there was an $11 billion tax increase on the ballot November 4th, 2008?

On November 4th, 2008, you had the opportunity to tell the tax-and-spenders in St. Paul that Minnesotans don't want more taxes! Unfotunately, voters were blindsided by the multi-million dollar campaign to pass the tax increase, and now we're all paying a higher sales tax to give $300 million a year more to the arts and cultural heritage. Check out our brochure from the Vote NO campaign to see why the Amendment was and still is a bad idea.

Getting Results: Does a more expensive education system buy you better results?

Can you remember a time when you didn't hear that our education system was facing a funding crisis?

It's pretty clear that something is wrong with the education system, its funding, or the way we think about it. Either the system is in a state of near permanent funding crisis, or our perceptions of that system are somehow out of sync with reality.

What is the truth, and what is the best way to get at that truth?

Getting Results: Schools First vs. Kids First

Education has been the keystone to America's economic and political success for the past 230 years, and in an increasingly competitive world economy its importance can only grow. But even as important as education is, not everyone involved in preparing our children for the future is pulling in the same direction. Schools First vs. Kids First examines the role that Minnesota's teachers' union, Education Minnesota, plays in our state and how their agenda doesn't necessarily make our schools better.

Gasbags: What the politicians and the pundits aren't saying about the flucuating price of oil and gas - and what you need to know

Most of us drive to work, the grocery store, and the day care center. When gas prices shoot up, it hits us where it hurts. Unfortunately, most us know what those rising prices mean to our budget, but few of us know what is causing those price increases and what can be done about them.

What we all need is a short lesson in energy economics. What is going on, how did we get here, and is there anything we can realistically do about the rising price of oil?

2006 Piglet Book of Wasteful State Spending

$1 million for a replica Viking ship in Moorhead? $310,000 for a Shakespeare festival in Winona? $129,000 for state art grants for North Dakota museums and theaters? You betcha. It's all true and it all comes out of your wallet.

Stadium Wars: Simple facts you should know about taxpayer funding of professional sports stadiums

Can anyone remember a time when Minnesotans weren't debating building new stadiums for one of our professional teams? Sometimes it seems that professional sports teams and their boosters spend more time and energy trying to get big subsidies for new facilities than trying to win championships...

A Taxpayers Bill of Rights for Minnesota (Part 1) (Part 2): Protecting Minnesotans against runaway government spending

Did you know that much of government spending is on autopilot? That's right - the numbers that are used to project every state budget assume that spending will go up automatically unless legislators pass a law to prevent it. A Taxpayers Bill of Rights would force government to live within its means and stop unsustainable increases in taxes and spending.
