E-Update July 2, 2010

Please take time this 4th of July while enjoying the fireworks, the day off, the picnic, the camping trip, the time with family and friends to remember what we are celebrating is our liberty and economic freedom.  Stop to reflect on the sacrifice of the thousands who have given their life to gain and preserve the liberties and freedoms we as Americans enjoy everyday.  Will we be able to preserve these same freedoms and liberties for future generations of Americans? A contribution to the Taxpayers League of Minnesota could help.

1. Local Governments Seeking Bailouts.

Local government spending has gone unchecked for years. Now facing large budget deficits, local governments are crying out for help.  The question is do they really want to change or are they seeking additional bail-outs from state and federal taxpayers?

2. Democrat “Muckraking”

Democrats are turning to private citizens to solicit “embarrassing” video or recorded comments to smear GOP candidates.  In an unbelievable twist of behavior Dems have done a 180°, turn from calling this type of campaigning “dirty tricks” to asking individuals to do their dirty work.

Read about their new tactic here.

3. From Subsidized Transit to Subsidized Parking

St. Paul’s solutions to complaints from business owners of University Avenue about the loss of on-street parking due to the construction of the light rail are free money.

St. Paul’s Housing and Redevelopment Authority has “granted” $1.3M in free loans to maintain and improve parking lots along University Avenue.  The loans have been awarded to 24 lucky businesses to repave, repaint, and generally keep up their parking lots in preparation for the construction and operation of LRT in the corridor.  Wasn’t light rail supposed to reduce automobile traffic?

4. Dayton’s Class Warfare: A Losing Proposition

Mark Dayton’s tax the rich policy would spell disaster for our state.  Dayton’s plan would make Minnesota home to the highest personal income tax rate in the nation by three points and could make more business friendly states the new homes of our entrepreneurs

5. Wouldn’t It Be Nice to Vote Yourself a Pay Raise?

The Ramsey County Commission felt they were doing such a great job running the county that they merited a pay raise.  The Commission voted themselves a 2% raise to a salary of $84k/year.  On the heals of bad employment numbers for Minnesota, the commission has rewarded themselves while many Minnesotans struggle with unemployment and reduced wages.

6. Some States Know How to Spur Economic Growth

Recognizing the need to create jobs and promote growth Rhode Island’s state legislature cut its income taxes drastically in a unanimous House and Senate vote.  Democrats and Republicans came together slashing income taxes to bring Rhode Island from the 4th highest taxed state to 25th place next year.
